Charlottesville Downtown Mall - Transparency in Design

Purpose and Need

The City values the 30-year old Downtown Pedestrian Mall as a central community, economic and social asset for its citizens and visitors; an asset which must be maintained and strengthened to continue the great successes.

The update of the Downtown Pedestrian Mall will maintain the current design features, with the minimization of structural and safety issues, and overall extension of the useful life of the mall.

In the Fall of 2007, the project began with an inventory and assessment of existing conditions with a review of priorities and timelines presented to stakeholders in January 2008. The Design Review on June 30 outlined key features approved by the City Council.   Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2009.

The primary goal of the project is to achieve these results in the least disruptive way to residents, businesses, shoppers and entertainment venues.  The Mall will remain open for business throughout the planning and construction periods.
