Day 71 - St. Patty's Day Update

Construction Weather:  Overcast, 40^oF - 60^oF 

Hello faithful readers!  Today is St. Patrick's Day, and along with our construction update we have prepared a little game.  Each of the photographs below has a shamrock that looks like the one pictured to the left.  See if you can find all the shamrocks!!! 

200 West is essentially complete, with new pavers and granite banding. New lighting and finishes around the trees are still pending.

100 West is also essentially complete, with new pavers and granite banding.

100 East is complete on the north side.  Demolition work is underway in the center, while the old brick pavers remain on the southern side.

Central Place is essentially complete.  Only the finishing touches of finishing around the lights, trees and refurbishing the fountain are still needed.

200 East is finished on the northern side and in the center.  Work will begin shortly on the southern side.

300 East is essentially complete in the center portion.

400 East is essentially complete, with brick pavers and granite banding. Lighting and tree finishes remain to be done.

500 East is nearly done.  The southern portion will be finished soon.

Baggby's Brings It!

Another Downtown restaurant has sponsored a luncheon for the construction workers who are working tirelessly to restore the Mall before the anticipated May completion.  This time it was none other than that lovely little gourmet sandwich shop: Baggby's 

A hearty thanks to everyone over at Baggby's for the delicious lunch!

Construction Update

Construction Weather:  Clear, 31^oF - 55^oF

As is usual these days, there is much activity on the construction process. Parham Construction continues to work on demolition and crews can be seen focusing their efforts on both the 100 East Block, as well as near the 3rd Street intersection.  At 3rd Street there will be minor utility work as crews connect 2 water lines to create a looped system.

As announced last week in the post entitled "Tree Watch",crews from Waynesboro Landscape and Garden Center have begun installing the trees near Central Place.

The 500 East Block is finally recieving its fair share of pavers as crews work quickly to finish off the center corridor section.  Completion is expected this week.  Thanks to all the 500 Block East business who have been patient with the process!

Hangin' with Halprin

Lawrence Halprin.  If you have been following this Downtown Mall Renovation at all you have probably heard that name tossed about. 

Lawrence Halprin is the visionary behind the Charlottesville Downtown Mall.  Charlottesville is one of many cities that chose to turn it's downtown Main street into a public social space for pedestrians, and the man who brought about this wave of renewal was Lawrence Halprin himself.

Below are some of the original concept drawings for what was to become the Downtown Mall.
