Next week we will begin to see work of a different nature taking place among the new pavers and granite. Starting early next week, Waynesboro Landscape and Garden Center will begin placing new trees on the Mall. Now, before you get worried about all those wonderful willow oaks that create the canopy of the Mall, let us assure you, these trees will not be touched.
7 trees total will be planted. The 6 maples trees at Central Place will be replaced. In a recent tree study conducted for the Project by Van Yahres Tree Company (a local Charlottesville firm since 1919), it was established that the health of the existing maple trees was so poor that they needed to be replaced immediately. The map below shows the maples to be replaced in a RED shade.
1 willow oak will be replaced, but this one was removed by Mother Nature herself (with some help from some chain saws AFTER it died) a few years ago. (You may have noticed the remaining stump over the recent years; its located near the intersection of 3rd Street in front of Virginia National Bank). The map below shows the willow oak to be replaced in a GREEN shade.
