Construction Weather: Wintery Mix, 32oF
Demolition activities continued despite the day long light wintery mix of rain and freezing rain. Crews from Parham Construction Company began demolition of the center portion of the Mall on the block between 2nd Street West and Old Preston Avenue. Crews were able to complete the demolition in a single day.
Work crews have set up barriers for work in the next area of demolition, between 4th Street and 5th Street.
Crews from Design Electric began sawcutting the existing slab for the installation of new conduit for the Mall lighting. All of the lighting on the Mall is being replaced with modern, high efficiency fixtures. In addition, the Project involves the installation of new conduit and conductors for the lighting to replace the deteriorated or damaged original systems. Design Electric is a Charlottesville based electrical contractor which will be responsible for the demolition and replacement of the lighting system on the Mall. In addition, Design Electric will be replacing the electrical panels servicing the Mall, and will be installing new, state of the art lighting control systems utilizing astrometric controls.
Design Electric workers are removing the existing poles, however, the existing circuits will be used to power the temporary lighting during construction.
Temporary lighting will be provided by remounting the existing poles in these temporary bases.
The fenced area on 1st Street between Water Street and South Street will be used to stockpile materials (masonry pavers, setting sand, etc.) in immediate proximity to the work, which will allow for easy movement of material to the areas where work is occuring, while minimizing storage on the Mall itself.
